SAG DNA Painter 2020 Webinars - Activities and References

1    Activities

To undertake these activities, you should register for a free DNAPainter.com membership.

Activity 1 - Ancestral Tree tool

Using the Ancestral Tree tool-

  • manually prepare your pedigree tree back to your great grandparents,
  • download a picture of the tree and
  • share a copy of the tree to DNASydneyDiscussion[at]gmail[dot]com.

Activities 2&3 - What are the odds (WATO) tool

Use WATO Version 1 for this case study.   Just do as much as you can.  There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion at our next session.   You can email any questions prior to the next session to DNASydneyDiscussion[at]gmail[dot]com.

Research question: What is Gail's relationship to Chris, Deb, John and Rob?

This is an example of a DNA dilemma from my family.  You were introduced to the case study during Friday’s session.  At our next session, we’ll take some twists and turns with the case study to look at the WATO tool.

What we know:

  1. Gail is a shared match with Chris, Deb, John and Robert at GEDmatch.com.  Gail, Chris and Deb tested at FTDNA.  Chris, Rob and John tested at AncestryDNA.  Chris, Deb, John and Rob have transferred their raw DNA to MyHeritageDNA.
  2. Deb, John and Rob are siblings.
  3. Chris is their first cousin.
  4. Deb, John and Rob's mother, Pat, is the sister of Frank, Chris's father.
  5. Frank and Pat are the children of Jim and Essie.
  6. Jim and Essie were born in 1891 and married in 1919 in Sydney.  Jim was born in Newcastle and Essie was born in Sydney.
  7. Frank was Jim and Essie’s first child.  He was born in 1920 in Sydney.
  8. Pat was Jim and Essie’s second child.  She was born in 1930 in Sydney.
  9. Chris was born in 1953 in Sydney.  She shares 517cM of DNA with Gail.
  10. Deb was born in 1955 in Sydney.  She shares 239cM of DNA with Gail.
  11. John was born in 1958 in Sydney.  He shares 235cM of DNA with Gail.
  12. Rob was born in 1964 in Sydney.  He shares 246cM of DNA with Gail.
  13. Gail was born in 1946 in Sydney.

Activities 2

Using WATO Version1, prepare a family tree showing the relationships between Jim and Essie and their grandchildren (Chris, Deb, John and Rob) showing the DNA each shares with Gail.

Activities 3

Duplicate your first WATO and then plot the 5 "possible" relationships between Gail and "the cousins".   From the information you have, are there any that can be ruled out as unlikely based on "time and place"?
